California Strawberry Festival

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the California Strawberry Festival in Oxnard, California. One of the top festivals in the nation, this two-day event is host to over 50 food vendor and over 200 arts and crafts vendors. There is no better way to spring into summer than food, entertainment, contests, and crafts.

With over 50 food booths present at this year’s festival, there is bound to be a strawberry treat for everyone, with dishes as delicate as chocolate covered strawberries and as wild as deep fried strawberries. Probably most popular is the “Build your own strawberry shortcake” booth, offering a variety of shortcakes, toppings, and of course—strawberries. Keep an eye out for participating charity booths that will be donating 100% of its food profits to local charities.

To celebrate such a landmark anniversary, the festival grounds have been expanded by 50%, which means three stages of entertainment from morning to evening. The weekend highlight will be the “Battle of the Bands” lineup with local artists and bands competing for first place. What’s more, the third stage has been designated for youth bands and drum circles. Check out the full lineup to ensure you never miss a beat of this year’s entertainment.

What is a festival without a little light competition? This year the Berry Blast Off Recipe Contest will focus on non-baking strawberry recipes including sauces, desserts, drinks, jams, and spreads. Last year’s winner took the grand prize with her savory Korean Style Strawberry Marinated Beef Tacos in Lettuce Leaves and Daikon Radish Sweet and Spicy Kimchi. It’s safe to say that the competition is tough! Other contests include the “Battle of the Bands” contest and Elementary School Youth Art Design Contest, and the Official Poster Contest. Be sure to check the festival’s website for entry rules and submission deadlines.

The 200 artist venues featured at this year’s festival will no doubt wow both young and old. Small businesses and home made crafts will include paintings and sculptures, pottery and ceramics, toys and trinkets, and furniture and jewelry. Whether you’re sprucing up your home or purchasing unique gifts, be sure to support local southern California artisans.
