The Greatest Show on Surf - San Clemente Ocean Festival

Your summer vacation wouldn’t be complete without attending this year’s San Clemente Ocean Festival. Between beach games, water sports, antique car show, Ocean Art Show, free concerts and tons of events for the whole family, there is sure to be something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

The San Clemente Ocean Festival began in 1976 as a way for the public to engage in beach games together with the lifeguards who worked the beaches. Now a non-profit organization, the festival sponsors scholarships and grants for local community members, and raises awareness for pressing environmental causes.

On July 21, the SCOF will kick off at 6am with the SUP Surfing Championships . As a spectator, pull up a chair for a few minutes or a few hours and check out the unbelievable talent of surfers and paddle boarders. Competitors can sign up in three different classes: Men’s 39 and under, Men’s 39 and up, and Women’s.

Just up the beach starting at 9am you will find the Lifeguard Competition where lifeguards from all over will surf, rescue, and lift their way to the grand prize. If you’re looking to participate, know that the competition is based on overall points. However, participants are encouraged to sign up for as many or as few events as they’d like.

But of course, there’s also a healthy dose of competition for the little ones. San Clemente Ocean Festival’s Dolphin Dash is open to youth ages 4-12. At the end of the race all participants will be awarded a medal.

Close out your Saturday at the beach with the festival’s family beach party and free concert. From 6pm-8pm, families may gather at Fisherman’s Restaurant’s spot on the beach for performances by Moonshine and other artists.

If you can’t make it Saturday, don’t worry! July 22 is just as packed with an array of events. From 6:30am-2:00pm teams of up to 10 people will compete in the festival’s annual Sand Sculpting Competition. Sand artists may enter in categories such as Castles and Things and Creatures. But don’t worry—if sand art is not your thing, spectators are welcome to walk around and watch the sculptors hard at work.

Also on Sunday is the Great Rubber Duck Race . Throughout the two-day event, anyone and everyone is encouraged to purchase and decorate little ducks for just $5. At 4pm on Sunday, the ducks will be released into the waves to see which lucky duck makes it to the finish line first. Nothing serves as a better finale to a perfect weekend than a rubber duck race!
If you’re looking to bond as a family while giving back, this San Clemente Ocean Festival is the perfect place for you.
